The Department of Homeland Security has conditionally approved a virtual fence to monitor activity along the border southwest of Tucson. The high-tech fence will be made up of nine towers placed along 28 miles near the small town of Sasabe, Arizona. The town runs along the Arizona-Mexico border.
The department will test the fence and its effectiveness at detecting illegal border crossing for a period of 45-days. According to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the fence will provide Border Patrol with better visibility and the ability to respond to attempts to enter the country illegally.
