Thieves who are looking to gain entry to your home might have an easier time thanks to a special key that is readily available on the Internet. The key called a “Bump Key” can be used to open the tumbler type door locks commonly used to secure homes all over Arizona. According to a recent report from KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco, bump keys are cheap and easy to purchase on the Internet.
The bump keys works quickly and easily. The key is inserted in a door lock. A couple of taps to the key with a hammer or mallet, followed by a quick turn and the lock is opened and all of your belongings are there for the taking. A potential thief can even watch one of the several “how-to” videos uploaded to websites on the Internet.
There are locks that homeowners can purchase which cannot be opened with a bump key. Unfortunately these locks are somewhat pricey (according to the report from KPIX, they cost about $80) compared to the tumbler door locks. But they might just be a smart investment to protect your home.
